Today can be the start of freedom from habits holding you back from holiness! 🙌
In this episode of “The Catholic Gentleman,” John Heinen and Devin Schadt tackle three devastating habits that plague virtually every Catholic's journey.
They offer a practical and simple framework for understanding and conquering these universal struggles before they consume your life, relationships, and soul!
1) Defeat Laziness With Purpose
Sloth steals your spiritual energy, leaving you too empty for meaningful prayer or loving action. Schadt makes it clear that "sloth is sadness in the face of divine good." It robs you of joy and blocks His grace.
How do you fight it? By embracing even small tasks with purpose, knowing each action can be an offering back to Him.
2) See People Whole
Lust isn't just a private struggle with custody of the eyes. It sees people for what they can do for you and uses them to meet your needs, rather than loving selflessly. Heinen explains that "it reduces an individual, a person, to their parts. It doesn't treat them as their whole."
Whether in relationships, work, or family life, this mindset poisons authentic connections. Break free by seeing others as whole persons, not means to an end, and remembering everyone is made in God's image!
3) Be Mindful at Meals
Ever rush through dinner just to get to something else? You may be falling into gluttony. Schadt says that "unless we tame the enemy dwelling within us, namely our gluttonous appetite, we have not even stood up to engage in the spiritual battle." Eating mindfully is much more than eating healthily. It also frees your heart to be present with your family and receptive to God's love.
The gentlemen share that by confronting these habits with humility, clarity, and their practical steps, you can begin to live with greater freedom as a child of God.
